Tenth knitaversary and a giveaway!

It’s been a few years since I’ve celebrated a knitaversary, but this year is a momentous year, indeed.  My friends, this month marks TEN years since I learned to knit.  TEN!!!  I started this blog shortly thereafter, and knitting has permeated my life ever since.

Speaking of my blog, with the help of my lovely friend Carrie of the Carrieoke blog and her website design business, identity web and photo, I’ve finally taken the plunge and transferred my blog from Movable Type to WordPress.  This transition has been a long time coming – my Movable Type install was old, decrepit, spam-filled, and just entirely outdated.  Kids and work and life got in the way for far too long, and a few days ago I said, that’s it, I’ve had it!!!  Carrie did a phenomenal job transferring all my archives, comments, and RSS feeds, and tweaking the formatting so all my links remain intact.  It is my hope that the transition is completely seamless for you, but please contact me if you find anything amiss!

I will give you some fabulous incentive to actually click through and check out my new “digs” – a giveaway!  Yes, let’s celebrate my knitaversary in style!!!  This year, I will give away some handknits – items I’ve knit, items I’ve loved knitting, but that I haven’t found myself to actually use.

From left to right, we have the recently-completed Lehe Square Shawl, the Henslow Shawl I knit a few years ago, and the Alpine Frost Scarf I just blocked last week and haven’t even shown you yet!  (Some details about the Alpine Frost Scarf here.)  One of these items could be yours!

To enter this giveaway, simply leave a comment on this post before Wednesday, June 11th, 9 p.m. EST. Please read here for complete rules of this giveaway.

Thank you for knitting with me for ten years, my friends, and here’s to ten more!!!

  14. MelissaPurls

Happy Knitaversary! Thanks for learning how to knit–and sharing your talents with all of us!

  15. Kathy

I found you through Nova and knit your Jaywalkers – probably still my best fitting socks, 8 years later. I had no idea you’d only been knitting a year longer than me – you’re so accomplished! Website appears to be running okay…. happy knitiversary! xx, Kathy

  16. Kathie

Only 10 years of knitting – what accomplishments you have achieved in 10 years. Congratulations.

  17. Anya

Congratulations! I wish I could remember the exact date I started to knit, but it’s somewhere shortly after the publication of a Martha Stewart “Baby” magazine with an article titled something like “Learn How to Knit and Make Something Cute for Your Baby!” So I bought bamboo size 8 straight needles, Plymouth Encore, and the two recommended books (thank you, Melanie Falick/Kristin Nicholas and Vicki Square) and learned how to knit, and made something hilariously ugly for my baby. :). I have to add– this April, 13+ years later, my now tall and handsome kiddo asked for a Rockaway cardigan (Jared Flood pattern), and I whipped one up for him in time for his 8th grade class trip, and it’s NOT hilariously ugly. Happy ending. 🙂 –Bookaholic13 on Rav

  18. Sarah

Congrats! Hmm….you’ve made me reflect on my knitting time. Not sure….maybe 7 years? Anyway, you do beautiful pieces!

  19. Christie

10 years! Congratulations! Knitting kept me sane through 35 years of teaching/faculty meetings… started when my first little boy was born and now knit for his children, so rewarding.

  20. Leslie in MA

Happy 10th year knitting, Kathy! I’m sure you never thought you would be an established name in the knitting world on top of your other life accomplishments when you picked up those pointy sticks 10 years ago.

I hope the new web design allows you to visit us more often – even when the new family addition shows up.

  21. Maggie

Congratulations!! I love your posts and your patterns. I started following you with the Jaywalker pattern. Just a wee bit bummed I can’t enter your giveaway since I live up here in Canada 🙁
But I do have the Lehe Square in my queue… I was surprised it was the same pattern as the one in the book. Yours looks so much better 🙂

  22. Sally

The blog rehab looks awesome and is working great for me. I am happy to have known you for most (if not all) of your 10 years of blogging. Let’s go for at least 10 more!!!

  26. Samina

Congratulations! I’ve been following your blog since its early days & can’t believe that a so many years have passed! I’ve been knitting for just a bit longer than you have, but your output’s been a bit more prolific than mine. Life & a kid got in the way of my output too. I’m hoping to have more time, now that the kid’s a bit older. Perhaps, you will too.

  27. Shirley Rae

Congratulations on the 10 year knitaversary, I have been following your blog since I started my own way back in 2006, where does the time go. Have to say I think the new look is fab, here’s to another 10 years 😀

  28. Sara

I think your new blog design looks great, and I love the little sweater hanging in the tree! Congratulations on 10 years and continuing to knit after the birth of your child. I put my knitting down for almost 20 years after having children!

  29. Dianne King

Congrats on your 10th anniversary! I’ve enjoyed your posts for years and always appreciated your wonderful projects. The new blog looks great and the gorgeous little sweater at the top sent me scurrying to find the details in your Completed Projects…that looks like one I NEED to make for my new niece!

  30. Lisa

Congratulations on your ten years of knitting! I’ve been following your blog for years and enjoy it very much. Your choice of patterns is always so elegant (except for the things you knit for your son–so cute!) and I so appreciate your opinion, narration of the process, hint for bettering the design, and gorgeous pictures of the finished project. You always make me want to knit the very same thing. Anyway, thanks for the giveaway and I’ll always be a fan.

  31. Madingley

Only ten years of knitting and you’ve accomplished all this? That is staggering. Congratulations.

  32. Andrea W

Congratulations on not only learning to knit, but sticking with it and blogging about it for 10 years. Your works appear beautifully done; each stitch knit with love and attention to detail. Also, congratulations and best wishes for the coming event: the birth of your daughter.

  35. Amber

How lovely! Happy knitiversary! I think I passed my ten year sometime in the last couple years.

  36. Leta

Your are such an inspiration to me. I have been knitting seriously for about 4 years, although I learned how to knit 60 years ago! I love your approach to life.

  37. Joanna

I have enjoyed reading your blog for nearly all of those ten years, and have relished your valuable tips and suggestions. And maybe most of all, loved seeing your baby turn into a darling little boy.

  38. Debbie H

Congratulations on 10 years!!! Your things are gorgeous. I would be honored to wear any of them. Thanks

  39. Andrea

  40. Carol M

Happy 10th year of knitting – I love that you are celebrating this milestone! Great blocking on those shawls!

  41. Mary Beth

I’m generally a lurker and not a comment-er, but I believe your blog is one of the first knitting blogs I started following when I jumped head first into the online knitting world about six or seven years ago now. I’ve always loved to see your work – your lace is phenomenal, and though I’ve never gotten the hang of crochet, I always liked your yearly potholders! Congratulations on 10 years!

  42. Laurie

I have been knitting forever (20+ years, 30+ years?). But oh my goodness, I think yours was the first blog I ever found – maybe even before I really understood what a blog was. (You were knitting Tivoli, so I guess it was 2005. Wow.) You have been a source of information and inspiration for me since. I followed you through the demise of MagKnits, Woolcott & Co, and saddest of all, Windsor Button. I’ve “watched” your adorable son grow into and out of the cutest hand-knits, and I wish you many many happinesses as you move forward with another decade of knitting and another baby on the way.

  43. Erin

Wow! What a milestone. I think I have been reading your blog for most of these past ten years. Congratulations!

  44. Marla

Congratulations on your knitaversary, Kathy. I have always enjoyed reading your posts and seeing your fabulous work. The new blog looks great. Here’s to another ten years knitting. Marla

  47. Murphknits

Happy Knitaversary! Your new site is terrific. And, I love the sweet little sweater in your masthead. Will search your site to see if I can find the pattern.

  48. Gwen

Happy Knitaversary! And what an amazing giveaway – I can’t decide which one I’d like most to win.

  49. Alix

It doesn’t seem as if Grumperina is a proper name any more for this grown-up knitting, blogging, working Mom. Looking forward to what comes next from you. Congratulations on your first decade.

  50. Karen in Michigan

10 years??? Oh wait, when I started reading, you weren’t married, no kids, etc. How time flies and the changes it brings. Congratulations. Please enter me as I would love any of the lovely prizes.

  54. Helena Dias

Your blog was my inspiration to pick up the needles again. Your work is beautiful. Keep on knitting. Thank you for sharing your lovely work. And the giveaway.

  55. Teresa

You were the one who inspired me to learn to knit lace. Congratulations! Here’s to 10 more!

  56. bloepper

i’m not eligible for your giveaway (*sniff*, cos that henslow shawl is LOVELY), but i just wanted you to know that the switch over truly does appear to have been seamless and i’ve enjoyed your input over the past four or five of those 10 years you’ve been blogging.

  57. Angelbis

Congratulations on your knitiversary! I’ve been knitting longer (18 yrs) and am nowhere near as accomplished — you are a real inspiration! And the new blog set up looks terrific.

  58. Laura

Yay! 10 Years! I wonder how many of those years I’ve been reading your blog for? At least 6 or 7 I think. Woe. I should really complete more knitted projects! Congratulations! p.s. love the knew look of the wordpress site, but where’s the grumperina pic?

  59. Ginny

Ten years knitting or ten years of blogging about your knitting? Either way congratulations!

Cutie sweater for the blog picture.

  60. Carol Drummond

Has it been 10 years already? I’ve been following your blog for at least 7, maybe 8 of those years, enjoying every post. Congratulations!

  61. Kristin

I always enjoy seeing your work, thank you!
You inspire me to try and make time to fit knitting into my schedule!

  62. Julie

Congratulations! Yours was one of the first blogs I ever read. Claudia (whose blog was THE first, and much missed) pointed me to you with her great list of blogs she read, and I’ve been enjoying your blog ever since. I’m another neuroscientist, originally from Cambridge but now a full time faculty wrangler in university administration in Boston. Congrats!

  63. liveknitup

I think it is a great idea to mark the anniversary of learning to knit. Congratulations and thank you for this very generous giveaway.

  64. Brenda

Congratulations on ten wonderful years of knitting. I’ve been reding your blog for many years, and have been inspired to try new techniques and push my knitting boundaries because of you. So thank you!

  65. cathy

Happy 10 years! Your blog looks great. Your post on cable knitting without a cable needle is what made me love knitting cables. So thank you!!

  66. Loel Kim

Congrats on 10 years! I have sooo enjoyed your blog now, for several years, and have learned how to be brave in fixing “finished” projects, been inspired by your knitting, and have simply enjoyed seeing your life unfold. Thank you for the effort and here’s to at least 10 more years!

  67. Ana

You know, I’ve been reading your blog for almost as long as you’ve been blogging. Having seen the kind of work you do, I have to say that $30 retail value is a LIE – did you forget that last zero?

Congrats on 10 years of knitting and best wishes for the next ten!

  68. Beth

Congrats! Your Jaywalkers was one of the first sock patterns I knit. Still love them. Happy 10 years!!

  69. Kate/Massachusetts

I have followed your blog for years and didn’t realize that you were not born with knitting needles in your hands! 🙂 Your knitting and socks have always been beautiful and well-done! Congratulations on ten years! May there be many, many more knitting years to come!

  70. Suzanne Wilsey

How wonderful that it’s been 10 years! Your knitting has been an inspiration to me. Thank you.

  71. Suenapse

Happy knittaversary! I love reading your blog but always miss the comment window so am happy not to have done so for once!

  72. Julia

Happy knitaversary! And thank you for the giveaway. I read the rules, and I must say, you have vastly undervalued your work. $30 retail value? Come on now! Is that even to cost of the yarn? Well, perhaps there are legal reasons or tax implications that force the issue.

  73. Carol

Trust that Grandma and Mom have enough lovelies. Thanks for all the encouragement you’ve done with this website. Computer went down so maybe this is a second reply only this one has the message. Keep those socks coming for Grandma.

  74. Jane

    Happy Knitversary!

I’m knitting some more jaywalkers right now (second pair, and I’m on the second sock). This pair won’t be as well travelled as the last, which got knitted in the UK, in NC, VA, and Japan…

  75. Bertha Mallard

Congratulations!!!! You’e accomplished quite a lot in ten years. Keep up the positives and continue to grow.

  76. Brenda Perreault

Congratulations! I can’t believe it’s been 10 years! I’ve been reading for 8 or 9 of them. Happy Knitversary!

  77. denise f

So generous of YOU to give US a chance at one of your masterpieces! While I’ve missed your more regular blogging, I am happy that you get the chance to check in from time to time! Babies are the best reason to not blog! haha.

Also, glad I’ve been a long-time reader. Without you I would not have known about Windsor Button and I’m happy I had that experience before their closing. 🙁

    Happy Knitaversary!

  78. Heather

Cingrats & happy anniversary! My 10th knitiversary is approaching in the fall, and I have been reading your blog almost as long as I’ve been knitting. Over the years, you blog has inspired me and challenged me to try new things, which made me into a fearless knitter. Thanks for your contributions to the knitting world!

  81. Susanne

I can’t believe it has been ten years!!!!!!Congratulations!! I have been reading your blog for that long and always look forward to your inciteful ren derings. I can remember when you campaigned to have Addi make “pointier” needles for lace knitting.. I can rmember your marriage and of course the baby and now one more!. Take good care and what a wonderful celebration.

  82. knitomi

Happy Tenth . . . and many more!
Thank you for all the interesting postings, I have truly enjoyed them!
Looking forward to seeing your knitting for baby girl,
Wishing you all the best, Ingrid N

  83. Miriam Paschetto

That is so wonderful that you know your knitaversary!! I love it. I learned to knit as a wee girl at my mother’s knee (and learned to crochet about the same time at my mother’s mother’s knee.) I’ve knit off and on (far more off than on, sadly, until the last several years) over the intervening 40 or so years. I only picked crocheting back up around 2 years ago. And I don’t even have any children!

You are an inspiration and I enjoy your blog a great deal! Thank you for keeping up with it. The new “home” is fantastic. The sweater on the header is gorgeous!

  84. LP Starr

Happy 10th! I am on year 6 and feel like I have grown so much with my knitting skills. I can even use what I learned in knitting and apply it to job skills when I interview!

  85. Amy

Congratulations, Kathy! I had no idea you *learned* to knit only 10 years ago! What an amazing knitter you are after such a short time.

The new blog looks nice – what is that adorable sweater on the header?

  86. Daniel Schultz

Congrats! You’re such an inspiration. How do you have enough time to accomplish all of your projects? It’s so fun to watch Grisha (?) grow up. He looks just like you. Looking forward to meeting number two and her handknit wardrobe.

  87. Louise

I love the way your ‘new’ blog looks! I’ve been a regular reader of yours for quite a while – congratulations on 10 years of interesting knitting and other stuff. And I’m glad your Grandma is getting another pair of socks – every Grandma should be so lucky!

  88. Sara H

Yay 10!! I’ve been reading here from very early on – I’ve always appreciated your mathematical skills when it comes to knitting. It’s helped me be brave enough to tackle some bigger projects. May the next 10 be filled with more knitting greatness! Thanks so much!

  92. Cindy Carpenter

Love the new look – so fresh and clean. I’ve read you from the beginning but I have yet to knit a pair of your fab Jaywalkers. Hope to this year. Here’s to 10 more!

  93. Jessica Dion

Thank you for continuing to knit, and blogging about it! I appreciate your reviews of books and patterns, thoughtful modifications, and the meticulous, beautiful way you execute projects. Your blog is a great read, and I hope you continue to knit and write about it. A few more pictures of your youngest models wouldn’t bother me at all.. 😉

  94. Julie Lanner

Congrats! I love your blog, your knitting is beautiful and your son is adorable. To many more years of knitting. I’m at over 50 years of knitting myself. And still loving it. I’m currently knitting Marie Fisher’s Beads and Arrows shawl. She’s on Ravelry. Try it when you get a chance. 847 beads and 800 yards of laceweight Merino. I guarantee it will infect you with the bead-encrusted lace shawl bug. This is my second one and I see many more in my future.

    Congratulations from Sweden,

    Anna Maria

  97. Shanda

I found your blog not long after I started knitting eight years ago when I was trying to figure out how to do cables. I can’t believe it’s been that long. Those shawls are absolutely worth more than $30!
